The Gospels: Series 955 – Each Gospel presents Jesus in a different way. The four portraits of Jesus help us to knew him more authentically. Mark, Matthew, Luke and John were all written at different times to various communities for a number of reasons. Each were trying to proclaim that Jesus is the Son of God and through him by faith we can receive eternal life.
Topics in Series 955 include:
The Gospel of Mark: Mark’s Gospel is the first written as well as the shortest. Mark redefines what “Son of God” means. His 16 chapters are the “beginning” of the Gospel. How we receive what is written and act on it is the end.
The Gospel of Matthew: Matthew takes Mark’s Gospel and adds his own theology and writes to a Jewish Christian community. Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and a new Moses. Jesus’ teachings are diverse and challenging.
The Gospel of Luke: Luke is the longest Gospel and he writes to a largely Gentile community, perhaps in Ephesus. His themes are the poor, joy, prayer and the Holy Spirit.
The Gospel of John: John is a maverick Gospel, much different from the other three. He emphasizes the divinity of Christ and that Jesus is the “logos” the Word made flesh. Jesus’ signs are meant to evoke belief.
